As a long-time volleyball player and coach, Tod Mattox had a go-to baby gift for all of his ex-players and
volleyball friends, the Molten V-70 fabric ball. In the fall of 2021, he couldn’t find one (no longer
available), so he took an old fabric pattern from John Kessel and went down a manufacturing rabbit
hole. He came out of the hole with the first SpikeLite, a fabric ball with a balloon bladder.
Tod figured this was a cool grow-the-game project, so he ordered 500 in February of 2022, and COAST
VBC (in San Diego) used them for their VolleyTots program, sending one home with each of the tiny
players. They were a hit! Now Tod was torn, for as much as he liked the SpikeLite concept, he loves
retirement.
Luckily, one of his coaching buddies (Ken Murczek from Oregon Tech) arrived on the scene just in the
nick of time. He not only loved the concept, he was all in on creating a business. So they dove in the
deep end and ordered 5000 in April, hoping to get them out to as many clubs, colleges, high schools, and
kids as possible for their summer camps and clinics.
The response has been wonderful! We’ve received several wonderful reviews, and we just returned
from JO’s, where we sold out of all the SpikeLites we brought to Indy.
